Heather was asked by the Silent Book Club New York City what inspired her to deviate from non-fiction and jump into fiction with Magic and Whiskers. Her response:

"Magic and Whiskers was inspired by the timeless bond between humans and cats—a connection stretching back to ancient civilizations where cats were revered and worshipped as sacred beings. From the temples of Egypt where Bastet reigned as a goddess of protection and grace, to Mesopotamia where Nergal embodied strength and mystery, cats have always walked beside us, half in this world and half in another. Their eyes still hold the beautiful echoes of those divine ancestors, their instincts guided by the same gods who once demanded offerings and reverence. To me, they are living relics of magic—creatures that remember what we have long forgotten about power, independence, and silent wisdom.

For more than twenty years, I have been devoted to the rescue and care of black cats—those being the most misunderstood and mistreated of their kind. Through every purr, every cautious glance, I felt their stories begging to be told. Writing Magic and Whiskers became my way of giving them a voice in this modern world, witnessing very human issues such as abuse, to alcoholism, to chaos, to remind readers that cats are more than pets; they are storytellers, survivors, and companions of our souls. Their magic endures, not only in myth but in the quiet, steadfast presence of every rescued cat who finds a home and, perhaps, remembers the divine bloodline they carry within."
